Reference information: rules, amounts and deadlines change. Check the date of the material and the official sources.

Anyone who wishes to marry in Italy is subject to Italian law. The law allows a foreign national who is in Italy to enter into a legal marriage even if they have no registered residence (residenza) in the country where they live and no right of permanent residence.
A valid identity document, such as a passport, is enough.

We provide help at every stage, including advice, gathering and preparing documents, legalisation, translations and apostilles (if needed), and we answer any other questions that come up while the documents are being prepared. If needed, we will accompany you.

A Ukrainian citizen who intends to marry an Italian citizen must obtain the main document required to register a marriage in Italy: the Nulla osta al matrimonio (certificate of no impediment to marriage), known simply as the Nulla osta.
It is the document confirming that there are no impediments to the marriage.
In other words, a certificate of capacity to marry.

To obtain the Nulla osta in Italy, you need to contact the Consulate General
of Ukraine and gather the required set of documents. On the basis of the documents submitted, the Consulate General of Ukraine issues the applicant with a certificate of capacity to marry in Italian, in accordance with art. 116 of the Italian Civil Code.

List of documents to gather:
From Ukrainian citizens who have never been married:
1) a notarised declaration of marital status
2) Ukrainian international passport
3) Ukrainian internal passport
4) birth certificate
5) carta d’identità (identity card), permesso di soggiorno (residence permit), if you have them
From Ukrainian citizens who have been married before:
6) divorce certificate
If the marriage was dissolved or ended by the death of the spouse:
the spouse’s death certificate
From the foreign partner (for Italian citizens):

  • identity document, passport – carta d’identità
  • a declaration that the foreign national has no objection to the marriage

On the basis of the above documents, the Consulate General issues the certificate of capacity to marry in Italian.
All these documents must be submitted to one of the Ukrainian consulates in Italy, by prior appointment.

If both partners are foreign nationals from non-EU countries and wish to marry in Italy, they must obtain a certificate of capacity to marry from the consular section of their own country and then, with this marriage clearance, go to the legalisation office, which will certify the signature of the ambassador or consul.

Important! The Nulla osta is valid for 6 months from the date you receive it.

Consular fee (as at 01.01.24): €46
For the certificate issued as a matter of urgency: €74
Both partners must be present when the documents are submitted!
The finished document must be collected by the Ukrainian citizen.

Once they have the Nulla osta per matrimonio, the couple must go to the Comune (town hall) with the documents they have gathered.

  • submit the application for the pubblicazione (publication of the banns)
    - the foreign partner must also provide a birth certificate
    * translated into Italian
    and apostilled
