What do you need to enrol at a university in Italy after finishing school?
The desire to study, a choice of subject and institution, and your documents ready.
The first requirement for university study is a school leaving certificate covering 12 years of schooling.
This is often an obstacle for Ukrainians, as secondary education in Ukraine used to last 11 years.
– Have you come to Italy with a secondary school certificate and want to go to university, but you are
one year of schooling short? Then you need to legalise your Ukrainian certificate:
have it apostilled and translated. Then enrol in evening upper secondary school courses and sit
the exam to obtain an Italian diploma (Centri Provinciali per l’istruzione degli Adulti – CPIA, provincial adult education centres).
The next step is to choose a course and a university. You can apply here: universitaly.it, or contact
the international students’ office of the university you have chosen. Ask for the list of documents
required for enrolment; usually these are identity documents (passaporto, permesso di soggiorno, codice
fiscale – passport, residence permit, tax code), your education documents, legalised and translated, and applications/completed forms.
Look for information on all the documents you need on the official websites and on university websites.
We would like to stress that each institution has its own list of documents and its own admission requirements.

Look for information on all the documents you need on the official websites (studiare) and on university websites.

– You already have a higher education degree from Ukraine and want to have it recognised by a university.
In Italy, universities have the right to “assess” your degree (fare il riconoscimento) and recognise it according to the Italian classification of qualifications (riconoscimento ai fini del conseguimento del titolo italiano). You apply for recognition of your degree to the university of your choice, submit all the required documents, and you will either receive full recognition (riconoscimento diretto/equipollenza totale) or
be offered a shortened course (abbreviazione di corso), allowing you to complete your studies, possibly with some of the subjects you have already studied credited.

– Or you can do it the other way round: first choose the course you are interested in and, once enrolled, apply
for an abbreviazione di corso.

Is there distance learning in Italy?
Yes. There are 11 officially recognised non-state universities where you can study remotely.
