Tax bonus of up to 1,200 euros for domestic workers: how to get the payment

If you work in Italy as a domestic worker (colf, badante or baby-sitter), you are entitled to a special state payment known as the “supplementary payment” (trattamento integrativo), formerly called the “Renzi bonus”. In addition, under certain conditions you can receive an extra 100-euro “Christmas bonus”.

What is this bonus and how much is it?

The main payment is worth up to 1,200 euros a year (100 euros for each month worked). Because employers in the domestic sector (families) are not withholding agents (sostituti d’imposta), they cannot pay this bonus directly in your monthly wages. That is why the money can only be obtained through your tax return

.

Who is entitled to the payment?

Entitlement depends on your annual income:

  • Income up to 15,000 euros: you are entitled to the full amount — 1,200 euros a year.
  • Income from 15,000 to 28,000 euros: the bonus may be paid only in part, depending on the ratio between your tax deductions and the tax due.
  • Income over 28,000 euros: you lose entitlement to the bonus.
  • Income below 8,500 euros: the payment is usually not granted, because such income falls within the tax-free band (no tax area).

Additional “Christmas bonus” (100 euros): paid to those whose income does not exceed 28,000 euros, who have at least one dependent child and enough tax due to absorb it (capienza fiscale).

How do you get the money?

To get the bonus, you must file a tax return (Modello 730).

Here are the main steps:

  1. File the 730: you can do this through the trade-union tax assistance centres (CAF) or on your own on the tax authority’s website.
  2. Choose the “without withholding agent” option (senza sostituto): this is mandatory for domestic workers.
  3. Enter your IBAN: the money will be transferred by the tax authority, the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency), directly to your bank account.

When will the money arrive?

Unlike other workers, who receive their refund in the summer, domestic workers who file without a withholding agent usually receive the money at the end of the year — from December or in January.

Important note: the tax calculation

Bear in mind that filing the 730 means your taxes are recalculated in full. Since no IRPEF (income tax) was withheld from your wages during the year, the return will first calculate the tax you owe the State and then subtract the bonus from it.

This means that the final amount paid out may be less than 1,200 euros, or even zero, if your tax liability exceeds the bonus.

To file a Modello 730 tax return, domestic workers (colf, badanti, baby-sitters) need to put together the documents proving their income and expenses for the tax period.

Here is the full list of documents you need:

1. Main income documents

  • Certificazione Unica (CU): the income statement your employer is required to give you. If you worked for several families, you must have a separate CU from each employer.
  • Payslips (Prospetti paga): if you have no CU, your payslips may be needed to check the figures.

2. Personal and bank details

  • Identity document and tax code (codice fiscale).
  • IBAN: the account must be in your name (intestato), so that the Revenue Agency can transfer your refund (the bonus) directly to your bank account.

3. Proof of contributions paid

  • INPS contribution receipts: you need proof of the contributions paid to INPS (National Social Security Institute) during the year.

4. Documents for tax deductions (detrazioni)

To reduce your taxes or get a larger bonus (for example the “Christmas bonus” or a refund of expenses), you must provide documents proving the expenses declared in Section E (Quadro E – Oneri e spese):

  • Family: details of children or other family members who are your dependants.
  • Medical expenses: itemised pharmacy receipts (scontrini parlanti) and invoices for medical services.
  • Housing: rental contract, receipts for mortgage interest paid, notary’s invoices (when buying your first home) or condominium charges.
  • Education and sport: receipts for nursery fees and university tuition, as well as children’s sports activities.
  • Transport: receipts for public transport season tickets.
  • Other: veterinary expenses, funeral expenses, contributions to buy back years of university study (riscatto laurea) for family members.

Important tip: since all these expenses must be documented, it is advisable to go to a tax assistance centre (CAF) or a professional, who can help you fill in every section of the return correctly so that you receive the maximum amount.
