What should you do if you lose your international passport?

Being left abroad without documents is always an unpleasant situation. Unfortunately, it can happen to anyone, but there is of course a way out. Here are your steps if you lose your Ukrainian international passport while in Italy:

1. Go to the nearest police office (Questura).

• Report the loss of your passport and obtain the police report or a statement certifying that you are temporarily without the document.

2. Contact the Embassy or a Consulate of Ukraine.

You will need to provide:

• Your Ukrainian internal passport (if you have it, or copies of it)
• The police report or statement
• A passport-size photo
• A completed application for a new passport

3. Pay the consular fee.

4. Collect your new passport. If you urgently need to return to Ukraine, you will receive a so-called “white” passport – a temporary document with which you can cross the border without problems and then have a new document issued in Ukraine.

The time needed to issue a new passport may vary, so it is advisable to contact the embassy or consulate well in advance.

• Make copies of your international passport before you travel.
• Keep the copies of your passport in a safe place, separate from the original.
• If you have lost your passport and cannot reach an embassy or consulate of Ukraine, you can contact the embassy or consulate of another country with which Ukraine has diplomatic relations.

If you are a Ukrainian citizen, the only document that proves your identity outside the country and with which you can cross borders is the Ukrainian international passport. The Permesso is your permit to stay in Italy (permesso di soggiorno); with it alone you cannot travel the world. So keep an eye on your international passport’s expiry date and be careful.
