Certificate confirming the exact place of birth

Documents and legalisation

Reference information: rules, amounts and deadlines change. Check the date of the material and the official sources.

The exact date and place of birth of a Ukrainian citizen are stated in their birth certificate. For the Italian authorities, documents issued in Ukraine must be legalised and translated as required by law.

To prove your place of birth to the Italian authorities, you must submit your birth certificate with an apostille affixed in Ukraine and a translation into Italian:

  • a translation made by a sworn translator accredited at an Italian court, or
  • a translation certified by a Ukrainian notary, followed by an apostille on the notary’s signature at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine (double apostille).

If the birth certificate does not state the place of birth (there are dashes instead), a Ukrainian citizen living in the consular district may submit an application to the consulate for a certificate confirming the place of birth.

Documents required for the certificate

  • Application for the certificate.
  • Valid Ukrainian international passport and 2 copies of it.
  • Copies of the first and second pages of the internal passport (if you have one).
  • Original and copy of the new-style birth certificate.
  • Copy of the old-style birth certificate.
  • Documents confirming a change of surname (if there are discrepancies).

Processing times

  • Urgent processing: up to 5 working days.
  • Standard processing: up to 10 working days.

The cost of the certificate is set by the consular fee schedule, and payment is made by card through the POS terminal at the consulate. You collect the certificate in person by showing your passport and the receipt.

Conclusion

To prove the exact place of birth of a Ukrainian citizen in Italy, you must submit the birth certificate with an apostille and a translation into Italian. If the certificate does not state the place of birth, the citizen can apply to the consulate for the relevant certificate. The procedure requires a set of documents, and the certificate can be issued in Ukrainian or Italian, within 5 to 10 working days.
