CNAUI representatives attend a conference at the Italian Chamber of Deputies

CNAUI representatives attend the conference “Il primo voto. Elettrici ed elette” in Rome

On 23 June 2026, Palazzo San Macuto (Sala del Refettorio, Rome) hosted a major conference entitled “Il primo voto. Elettrici ed elette” (“The First Vote: Women Voters and Women Elected”).

The event marked a landmark anniversary — 80 years since women first took part in elections in Italy — and offered an in-depth look at their role in building and strengthening today’s democratic institutions.

The conference brought together leading figures from the country’s political, academic and cultural life.

Anna Ascani, Vice-President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, welcomed participants, stressing the historic importance of women’s suffrage in shaping modern European democracy.

Giuseppe Soriero, President of the Association of Former Members of Parliament (Associazione degli ex Parlamentari della Repubblica), also gave an opening address.

The keynote speakers were distinguished Italian scholars and historians:

  • Patrizia Gabrielli — researcher and author of studies on the history of women’s movements;
  • Ester Capuzzo — professor and expert in modern history;
  • Umberto Gentiloni — respected historian and professor of contemporary history.
  • The panel discussion was moderated by the well-known journalist Conchita Sannino.

Among the guests were CNAUI President Lara Levchun and, representing CNAUI’s Department of Culture, the coordinator of the international platform “Dialogo Europeo” and president of the association “Un Ponte di Colori” (“A Bridge of Colours”), Olena Hromova.

The participation of a Ukrainian delegation in events of this scale underlines the active integration of Ukrainian institutions into Europe’s wider social, political and cultural life, as well as the importance of international dialogue in advancing democratic values.
