The National Congress of Ukrainian Associations in Italy (CNAUI) presented the art project “Un Ponte di Colori” (“A Bridge of Colours”) as part of the 2nd Giornata del Volontariato (Volunteering Day). The centrepiece was a solo exhibition in the town by the Ukrainian artist Haliia Mykhalchenko.

At the opening of the exhibition, the Mayor of Paliano, Dr Domenico Alfieri, expressed his sincere gratitude for the opportunity to present Ukrainian art to the town’s residents.

Francesca Calamari, the councillor for culture, also expressed her admiration for the exhibition, stressing the importance of cultural exchange and of preserving artistic heritage.

Haliia Mykhalchenko is a leading representative of Crimean Tatar culture who, through her art, preserves and promotes the traditions of Petrykivka decorative painting. Her story is one of strength, perseverance and the search for harmony in art.

After graduating from medical school, Haliia began a career as a doctor, but art always held a special place in her life. Studying Petrykivka painting with the master artist Erife Vira, she discovered unique techniques that became her creative calling.

When the war broke out, Haliia had to leave her home and seek refuge abroad. Bulgaria, Romania and later a monastery near Rome became her new home. There she found support and was able to continue her work, introducing Italians to the richness of Ukrainian folk art.

“Painting helps me forget everything and create a world full of beauty,” the artist says.

Mykhalchenko is an active volunteer: she takes part in charity fairs in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and runs workshops for children. Her art has become a symbol of a cultural bridge between Ukraine and Italy, and the exhibition in Paliano an important step in strengthening the ties between the two countries.

The honour of presenting Haliia’s works fell to her daughter Olga, who introduced the exhibition and told the guests the story of her mother’s artistic journey.

The “Un Ponte di Colori” project has brought together more than 120 artists, and we invite new talented artists to join our Union of Artists!
