MIOK and the National Congress

Congress#Education

On 26 November Ukrainian studies scholars from the International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations (MIOK), led by the Institute’s Director Iryna Kluchkovska, held a working meeting with Lara (Larysa) Levchun, President of the National Congress of Ukrainian Associations in Italy (CNAUI), and Tetiana Hryhorska, Head of the Congress’s Department of Education. The meeting took place under the patronage of the World Coordinating Educational Council of the Ukrainian World Congress and its Chair, Lyuba Lyubchyk.

At the meeting our colleagues from Italy presented their organisation: its structure, how it came to be founded, and its main aims and tasks.

Pressing issues were discussed, including:

  • the needs of newly arrived Ukrainians fleeing the war and the educational challenges they face;
  • the work of Saturday and Sunday Ukrainian schools in Italy;
  • the difficulties of teaching classes that mix levels of knowledge and age groups;
  • methods for teaching Ukrainian studies subjects to bilingual children and to foreigners;
  • the work of schoolteachers and the need for their professional development.

MIOK’s Ukrainian studies scholars set out a step-by-step plan for launching and developing cooperation with the educators of CNAUI’s Department of Education, which brings together more than 300 Ukrainian teachers.

The constructive dialogue resulted in a partnership agreement between MIOK and CNAUI’s Department of Education.

The first step in this cooperation will be a series of academic and methodological webinars and seminars given by MIOK researchers for teachers at Ukrainian schools in Italy.
