A warm and productive meeting with the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Pina Picierno

The meeting between the delegation of the National Congress of Ukrainian Associations in Italy (CNAUI) and the Vice-President of the European Parliament was particularly warm, substantive and friendly. The participants discussed a number of important issues concerning the information, social and professional context of the Ukrainian diaspora in Europe.

The meeting focused on:

  • The influence of Russian propaganda on voters in Italy, which is shaping distorted public attitudes towards the Russian-Ukrainian war. As a symbolic gesture, the delegation presented books and a USB stick with materials telling the truth about what is happening in Ukraine.
  • The need for tougher sanctions against Russian propagandists: the delegation stressed the need to ban actors, singers, musicians, journalists and other public figures who openly support the war and Vladimir Putin’s criminal regime from performing in Europe.

The protection of the rights of Ukrainians was discussed separately: people forced by Russian aggression to leave their homes, who have found temporary protection in Italy. The country has so far generously welcomed more than 300,000 Ukrainians. It was also stressed that these people want to work, integrate and be full members of Italian society.

We are grateful to the Vice-President for her attention to the problems faced by Ukrainians and for her openness to dialogue.

The agreement to continue working together is an important step towards stronger support for Ukraine and the integration of Ukrainians into the European community.
