Yuliya Faccin: A Journey Through Art and Culture

Yuliya Faccin is an art historian, painter and arts manager — born in Kharkiv, educated in Kyiv, inspired by Livorno. Her artistic path combines academic depth, educational outreach and emotive painting that speaks the language of ancient symbols.

After graduating with honours in art history from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, with a thesis on the Ukrainian avant-garde of the early twentieth century, she was a member of the Union of Young Artists and Art Historians at the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, curated numerous exhibitions in Kyiv and wrote about art, culture and ballet for leading Ukrainian publications.

After the full-scale war broke out in February 2022, Yuliya was forced to leave Kyiv and moved to Italy with her family, settling in Livorno. Far from putting her cultural work on hold, she stepped it up. She created her own online project, Arte&Aristocrazia — a channel on art, cultural history and aristocracy that seeks out deep cultural connections and is available in Ukrainian and Italian.

Recent years have been full of cultural events and conferences in Italy in which she has taken an active part:

In February 2025

Yuliya took part in a conference on the work of Lina Kostenko at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.

In May 2024

she gave two presentations on early twentieth-century Ukrainian avant-garde art to students at the Liceo “Ulisse Dini” in Pisa.

In March 2023

she took part in the Sant’Egidio conference “Le città marittime ferite” (“Wounded Seaside Cities”), which also focused on Odesa, where she helped interpret speeches from Italian and English.

In April 2023

she took part in the conference “Tra due guerre” (“Between Two Wars”) for students in Livorno, where she drew a parallel between the Second World War and Russia’s present war against Ukraine and spoke about Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

Alongside her work as an art historian and educator, she also paints. In Italy Yuliya felt the need not only to study art but also to express herself through painting, and in doing so she found her roots in giving visual form to the deep symbols of Ukrainian culture. The seascapes of Livorno, so rich and vivid, became her source of inspiration — canvases in which she brings the symbols of Ukrainian culture together with the atmosphere of the Mediterranean. Her aesthetic language took shape where Eastern philosophy (Yuliya studied classical Buddhist thangka painting at Shechen Monastery in Kathmandu) meets Ukraine’s archaic heritage. A special place in her work belongs to the Trypillia culture, an ancient civilisation on the territory of Ukraine that predated many great cultural traditions, which she reinterprets in a contemporary key.

  • In 2025 Yuliya is presenting her paintings to the public for the first time, in Rome: a series of Livorno seascapes imbued with Ukrainian archetypal images of the universe. These are not mere landscapes but an attempt to interpret a cosmogonic vision of the world through the symbols of the Sun, the Ancestral Nest, the Protective Charm and the Connection of All Things. In her work she explores the fine balance between water and fire, the feminine and masculine principles, intuition and action.

Her canvases are an invitation to an inner dialogue in which viewers can meet their own subconscious archetypes through poetic images of the sea and the sky.

Through her work Yuliya Faccin helps spread knowledge of Ukrainian art abroad, building bridges between cultures and promoting the national heritage. Her activity in Italy has become an important contribution to the cultural dialogue between Ukraine and Europe.
