20 February. Ukraine – Italy. Lesson of Resilience.
The first online meetings marking the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion have taken place.
The aim of the event is to reflect on the meaning of this date through its human dimension, to support Ukrainian children and to deepen the partnership between schools in Ukraine and Italy.
Dialogue. Solidarity. The future.
During the lesson the pupils talked about strength of spirit, the importance of education in difficult times, human stories of resilience and the role of young people in building a culture of peace. The programme was interactive and built around a shared dialogue between Ukrainian and Italian schools.
The “Lesson of Resilience” is meant to be a space for empathy and mutual support, and a symbol of the fact that education remains a bridge between peoples even in the hardest periods of history.
On 20 February two lessons took place between Ukrainian and Italian schools.
Pupils of the Central Ukrainian Scientific Lyceum, together with their teacher Viktoriia Burlaka, took part in an online meeting with pupils from a school in Riace (Calabria) and students of the Taras Shevchenko Lyceum in Kropyvnytskyi.
We thank the Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, its Department of Education and Science, and the coordinator of the 100×100 project in Italy, Nataliia Tabachuk.
A second lesson brought together pupils from forms 6-B, 8-A and 9-B of Lyceum No. 5 of Nikopol City Council, with their English teachers N. I. Poliakova, S. V. Harkusha and M. O. Taldykina, and pupils from the school in Riace (Calabria) with their English teacher, Ms Claudia.
During the meeting the pupils were able to talk with their peers, share their experience of school and tell each other about their interests and hobbies. The children asked one another questions with great curiosity, learned more about the culture and traditions of each other’s countries, and even picked up a few new Italian words.
The aim of the event was to create real-life communication situations that would improve the pupils’ communication skills, build their confidence in using a foreign language and foster openness to intercultural dialogue.
Meetings like these inspire, bring people together and give us faith in a shared, peaceful future. We hope to keep in touch and are looking forward to the next meeting.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the project mediators Lada Sushchenko and Ruslana Nikiforova for their support and help in organising the meeting.
