“The Magic of the Voice” by Oksana Zabuzhko: check your 2024 Radio Dictation

Congress#Education

The text of the 2024 Radio Dictation of National Unity, “The Magic of the Voice”, written by Oksana Zabuzhko, has been published; the dictation took place on 25 October. It was read by the poet and serviceman Pavlo Vyshebaba.

Key points of the text

  • Structure and emotional tone: the text opens with the familiar “brekhunets”, the wired-radio loudspeaker that signals the start of a new day. The moment creates a sense of unity among children and adults getting ready for school and work, brought together by the magical sound of the voice on the radio.
  • The power of the human voice: particular attention is paid to the human voice’s ability to stir emotions and make people fall in love even without any physical contact. Examples from folklore and from the history of Ukrainian music underline the place of the voice in cultural memory.
  • Historical reflections: Oksana Zabuzhko recalls the 1960s–1980s, when patriotism found its expression in football commentary. The commentators’ voices created a sense of unity, and their intonation conveyed solidarity with “our own”.
  • The present and change: despite technological change, Ukraine continues to be heard on the air, and its voice will never be drowned out. This testifies to the enduring cultural identity of Ukrainians.

“Магія голосу” (“The Magic of the Voice”)

Have you checked it yet? We are sure you did well!

Writing the dictation was thus an important step in uniting Ukrainians around their language and culture, bringing together people of all ages and professions. We wish everyone continued success in all their work and endeavours – may all your plans come true!
