The National Congress of Ukrainian Associations in Italy (CNAUI) joined the flash mob of unity around our native language
We must remember that how many people will speak OUR language tomorrow depends only on US today!
The All-Ukrainian Radio Dictation is far more than a simple test of knowledge. It is our powerful annual act of unity: millions of Ukrainians write it at the same moment, coming together around their native language wherever they may be.
This tradition helps us feel that we are a Nation.
This flash mob is especially powerful abroad. The National Congress of Ukrainian Associations in Italy also took part in writing the dictation together.
Ukrainians in Italy and around the world have proved it once again: language unites us even across thousands of kilometres! And of course, once the writing was done, we moved on, as tradition has it, to lively discussion and even some criticism of the author’s more complex constructions and of how fast the text was read, because talking about a language is what keeps it growing!
Because a living language is one we discuss, one we live by, one we breathe.
We write because this is how our Word lives.
Треба жити! (We must live!)
“…жити цікаво всупереч історії і заради тих, хто після нас говоритиме нашою мовою.” (“…to live a full life in spite of history, and for the sake of those who will speak our language after us.”)
We are delighted to report that Professor Salvatore Del Gaudio also took part: a linguist and lecturer at the University of Salerno, he speaks Ukrainian excellently and runs seminars on the history of the Ukrainian language and culture.
His participation is a genuine sign of respect for Ukrainian culture and a powerful symbol of the fact that the Ukrainian language reaches beyond geographical borders.
It is especially heartening when someone speaks to you in Ukrainian: sincerely, naturally, with respect for our language. And writing a dictation in Ukrainian is a real feat that deserves special recognition!
Note the asterisk at the end of the text: “Не завжди було чітко чути” (“It could not always be heard clearly”).
